second shooter at weddings

what is a second shooter at weddings

A second shooter is an additional photographer who works alongside the primary photographer to capture a wedding from multiple perspectives. They document moments happening simultaneously in different locations, ensuring nothing is missed. At Super 35, we shoot all 35 of our annual Sydney weddings with two photographers as standard.

the role of a second shooter

The second shooter operates as a complementary eye to the lead photographer. While one photographer captures the ceremony from the front, the other might document guest reactions from the side or back of the room.

This approach is particularly valuable during preparations when couples are getting ready in separate locations. One photographer documents the bride while the other covers the groom, capturing both narratives as they unfold in real time.

Second shooters also provide alternative angles during key moments. When the lead photographer positions themselves for the first kiss, the second shooter might capture the parents’ expressions or the wider scene including guests.

why couples choose two photographers

Two photographers mean fewer missed moments. Weddings move quickly, with meaningful interactions happening simultaneously across different spaces. A single photographer must choose what to prioritise.

The documentary approach relies on being present for unscripted moments. With two photographers, one can stay with the couple during portraits while the other documents guests arriving at the reception or candid moments in the cocktail area.

Coverage becomes more comprehensive without requiring subjects to repeat moments or wait. The day flows naturally while both photographers observe and respond to what unfolds around them.

what distinguishes effective second shooters

The best second shooters work intuitively with the lead photographer without constant direction. They anticipate moments, understand the visual style, and position themselves to complement rather than duplicate coverage.

Experience in documentary wedding photography matters more than technical skill alone. A second shooter needs to read a room, recognise significant moments before they happen, and work discreetly without interrupting the natural flow of events.

Consistency in style and approach ensures the final collection of images feels cohesive. When both photographers share a visual language and documentary sensibility, the wedding story emerges as a unified whole rather than two separate perspectives stitched together.

the super 35 approach

We’re a two-photographer team based in Sydney, shooting 35 weddings each year. Every wedding receives the same level of coverage and attention, with both of us present throughout the day.

Our documentary approach requires both photographers to work as observers rather than directors. We position ourselves to capture authentic moments as they happen, using our combined coverage to build a complete narrative of the day.

This method allows us to document parallel stories, from intimate preparations through to late evening celebrations. While one photographer might focus on close details and personal exchanges, the other captures the broader context and environmental moments that give each wedding its distinct character.

frequently asked questions

Do all wedding photographers include a second shooter?

No, many photographers work alone or offer a second shooter as an optional extra. Some photography styles require only one perspective, while documentary coverage typically benefits from multiple viewpoints. At Super 35, two photographers are included in all our packages because our observational approach depends on comprehensive coverage.

Will I notice two photographers during the wedding?

Good wedding photographers work discreetly regardless of team size. You’ll be aware of our presence during any directed moments like family portraits, but throughout most of the day we observe without intervention. The documentary approach means we’re documenting rather than orchestrating, which keeps our presence minimal.

How many photos do you deliver with two photographers?

More photographers doesn’t necessarily mean more delivered images. We deliver based on the story of your day, typically 80-100 images per hour of coverage. Two photographers provide better coverage and angles, but we edit for quality and narrative strength rather than quantity.

Do you shoot weddings outside Sydney with both photographers?

Yes, both photographers attend all weddings regardless of location. For regional New South Wales or interstate weddings, travel and accommodation costs are additional, but the two-photographer coverage remains consistent. We limit our annual bookings to 35 weddings so we can maintain this approach for every couple.
