how many hours of wedding photography coverage do you need

Sydney wedding photographer — Super 35

One of the first questions you’ll face when booking a photographer is how much time you actually need them there. The answer depends less on tradition and more on what’s happening on your day.

Most couples book between six and ten hours. Here’s how to work out what suits you.

what actually happens in six hours

Six hours typically covers ceremony and reception only. You might start an hour before the ceremony for some final preparations, document the service itself, then stay through to speeches and first dance.

This works if you’re getting ready at home or somewhere low-key, don’t need those shots covered, and your reception follows closely after the ceremony. It’s tight but manageable for smaller weddings or those with minimal downtime between locations.

eight hours is the sydney standard

Eight hours gives you breathing room. It’s the most common package among documentary wedding photographers in Sydney, and for good reason.

You can include getting ready coverage, travel between locations, a gap for photos between ceremony and reception, and still capture through to cake cutting or beyond. It accounts for the reality that Sydney weddings often involve moving between harbour foreshores, inner-city venues, or out to the northern beaches.

At Super 35, we shoot around 35 weddings per year with two photographers, and eight hours covers most timelines comfortably without feeling rushed.

when to consider ten hours or more

Longer coverage makes sense if your day has multiple locations, an extended cocktail hour, or if you’re starting early with both partners getting ready separately.

Some couples want coverage through to dancing later in the evening. Others have cultural ceremonies that span several hours before the reception even begins. If your timeline includes a lot of moving parts or you want a more complete record of the day, ten or twelve hours is worth considering.

how your timeline affects coverage

Map out your actual schedule first, then decide on hours. Include travel time between locations, buffer time for delays, and any gaps you’ve built in intentionally.

Key moments to consider:

  • Getting ready (usually 1–2 hours if you want this covered)
  • Ceremony (add 30 minutes either side)
  • Travel and location photos (can be 1–2 hours depending on distance)
  • Reception entrance through to first dance (around 2–3 hours)
  • Speeches, cake, dancing (another 1–2 hours if desired)

Add it up and you’ll have a realistic number. Most couples overestimate how late they want a photographer around.

the cost difference and what it means

Each additional hour usually costs a set rate on top of the base package. When you’re assessing your wedding photography investment, consider whether you’d rather allocate budget to more hours or to other elements like albums or second shooters.

Sometimes it’s more valuable to have two photographers for eight hours than one photographer for twelve. It depends on your priorities and how your day is structured.

a practical approach to deciding

Start with your ceremony time and work backwards and forwards. Be honest about whether you’ll actually want someone photographing you at 11pm, or if eight hours ending around 9pm feels right.

Most Sydney wedding photographers will talk you through this once they see your timeline. If you’re unsure, err on the side of one extra hour rather than cutting it too tight.

There’s no right answer, just what works for your day. Build your timeline first, then choose coverage that matches it.
